What is THC?

Apr 06, 2023Manu N.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a psychotropic cannabinoid found naturally in cannabis. It is the main psychoactive cannabinoid and produces effects that can be both relaxing and euphoric, such as improved mood, increased movement of thoughts, and a general feeling of well-being.

However, it is also associated with adverse effects such as anxiety, mental confusion and loss of motor coordination. Additionally, there is an increased risk of drug abuse related to its recreational use.

How does THC work?

THC works by binding to cannabinoid receptors found in the endocannabinoid system. It interacts with two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2, which are both involved in regulating the psychoactive and physiological effects of cannabis.

CB1 receptors are found primarily on neurons, and abnormal activity can lead to increased psychoactive effects of THC. CB2 receptors are located in immune cells; their activation by THC leads to a reduction in inflammation and an improvement in general well-being.

Effects of THC on the body and mind

THC has varied effects on the body and mind. Physically, it can lead to decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, and muscle relaxation.

On the mental side, THC can cause psychological relaxation and can also promote creativity and abstract thinkers. It can also affect mood, improving the overall sense of well-being or sometimes causing negative reactions such as anxiety or mental confusion.

The psychoactive effects of THC can last up to 3 hours after ingestion.

THC products (e.g., marijuana, edibles, tinctures)

There are several THC-based products. Marijuana is the most popular product because it contains varying concentrations of THC, as well as other cannabinoids and compounds.

Cannabis edibles are also available in the form of cakes, cookies, and even THC-infused drinks. Tinctures containing THC can also be administered sublingually or topically for faster absorption and a longer lasting effect than inhaled cannabis.

THC vs CBD: differences and similarities

THC and CBD are both cannabinoids found in cannabis. As for the difference, THC is psychoactive, meaning it can cause a state of euphoria when consumed, whereas CBD does not have this effect.

Additionally, some studies suggest that CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties while THC is associated with psychological or neurological problems in some people.

On the other hand, both have common medical benefits. Studies show that THC and CBD may help relieve chronic pain, improve symptoms related to mental illness, and reduce anxiety.
